Room Remodel Challenge – Foyer – Part 2

Welcome back to part two of my foyer remodel room challenge! If you haven’t read Part one, check out my earlier post where I go over renovating my floors and walls.

As I mentioned in my previous post, a home’s foyer is one of the most influential parts because it is the first room that a person sees when they enter.

To pick up where I left off…

I last spoke about painting my walls after removing the awful texture the home originally had. Now I was ready to add baseboard, crown molding, and trim around the doors and entryways.

This part is rather fun for me, although tedious. I do my best to take accurate measurements but because my walls are a little bit uneven sometimes I’m off and I’d have to go back to the garage to make additional cuts with my miter saw. My recommendation here is to overcut by a bit after you take your measurement.

You’ll be surprised how many times I come short after I take a measurement and then go to cut the trim. You’ll end up having to fill it in with a smaller piece and jigsaw them together or cut a new piece entirely. Both are a headache and a waste of materials.

Once all of the trim was in place I went in and caulked it all up. I then waited for it to dry so that I could paint it a white color that I use for all of my trim. Now my foyer remodel is coming together!

Trim painting

I have been sticking to a specific paint I get from home Depot. It’s the Behr’s Premium line: white semi-gloss enamel interior/exterior cabinet door & trim paint.

Eventually, I did end up replacing the front door. Although I waited a year later to do this. Doors are incredibly expensive! I had to take careful measurements of the width and height and find something 1-2 inches shorter on either dimension that would fit with the measurements.

Replacing the front door

Home depot makes it easy to search for the door you need based on measurements. You can either set up a meeting with one of the Home Depot window & door specialists there and they’ll walk you through designing your own door, of you can purchase a pre-fabricated door with the jamb and all.

I ended up going with a pre-fabricated single swinging door with two sidelites. I chose a door that had a small oval glass window and the two sidelites had glass windows spanning the entire length. Overall, the door and the installation cost me around $2500, and this was including additional materials that they would need in the event the door was too small to fit snugly. Surprisingly the installers did not need to use any of the additional materials so I ended up returning it.

The door came primed but not painted. Here comes another paint job for me to do! This time I chose a red color from Sherwin-Williams called red currant. I thought it went very well with my home as I have a brick exterior home which I painted using a limestone white paint.

I cleaned the door and used blue tape around the windows so that I wouldn’t get any paint on them.

It took me about two to three coats of the red currant paint to finally get an overall red consistent color without any streaks or irregularities. I used a mini roller for the main door and parts of the sidelites to give it that smooth texture look.

Here is the finished look! What do you think?

Decor & furnishings

Okay, now for the inside décor and lighting fixtures! I picked a bright colorful rug measuring 5×7 because I am all about color! For the light fixture, I went with semi-flush crystal tiered chandelier and a small ceiling medallion.

I then went with a bamboo and white side table with glass top for the entrance. I love the contemporary look, and it went really well with some of the art books I collected at a few museums and I went to check out. Here, I wanted to showcase them at the entrance for people to see (because I’m cultured y’all, haha). As for the wall art, My go-to place was At Home.

I found a beautiful rectangular art piece. Very serene landscape, which spanned the length of my side table. And just above it I added three small floral looking mirrors. Of course I had to add a plant to make this foyer room remodel look Zen. I went with a bamboo shoot faux plant. And for the planter pot, I went with a wicker pot from Target!

Altogether, I think this foyer remodel came out rather nicely! Let me know what you think!
