Poshmark vs Mercari: Why I Choose Poshmark as My Favorite Place to Shop Online
I have a confession to make: online shopping is a go-to pastime to the point that I may have a shopping problem (LOL). And with that, I find myself using online shopping apps like Poshmark and Mercari (because I’m all about shopping second hand). But when it comes to Poshmark vs Mercari, I gotta say, Poshmark takes the cake for me. Here’s why!
While I have written in the past on my opinion on whether selling on Poshmark is worth it or not, this post will be dedicated to my opinion as a buyer!
The Community Vibe
One of the first things I noticed when I started using Poshmark was the sense of community. Poshmark isn’t just about buying and selling; it’s about connecting with others who share your style and fashion interests. You can follow sellers, share listings, and even join virtual Posh Parties. It’s like a social media platform and a shopping site had a fabulous baby.
Mercari, on the other hand, feels more like a straightforward marketplace. It’s efficient, sure, but it lacks that community feel. For someone like me who enjoys a bit of interaction and engagement, Poshmark wins hands down.
I find that the sellers on Poshmark are more likely to respond to your offer with either a counter offer (or simply declining the offer), or answering any questions to write under their listings. Whereas Mercari for me feels like an inventory dump and a “let’s wait and see” selling platform. I don’t get the same interaction there that I do with Poshmark. Something to also consider if you are thinking of listing and selling your items on either one of these platforms. I’ve also noticed that sellers who sell on Poshmark likely also sell on Mercari as well.
Also, Mercari does not let you offer anything over a 10% difference than the price listed. So if someone really overpriced something you really want, you’re out of luck putting in a lower offer as you can only deviate 10% from the price listed – which is a bummer!
User-Friendly Interface
Poshmark’s app is super easy to navigate. The layout is clean, the search function is robust, and listing items for sale is a breeze. Plus, the way the app is set up makes it fun to browse – you can get lost scrolling through all the great deals and stylish finds.
Mercari’s interface is functional, but it doesn’t have the same polished, user-friendly feel. It works, but it’s not as enjoyable to use. For me, the overall user experience on Poshmark is just more pleasant and engaging.
Better for Fashion Finds
Poshmark shines when it comes to fashion. Whether you’re looking for trendy pieces, vintage gems, or designer steals, Poshmark’s got it all. The platform is heavily geared towards clothing, accessories, and beauty products, making it a paradise for fashion lovers like myself.
While Mercari does have a wide variety of items, including electronics and home goods, it doesn’t specialize in fashion to the same extent. If you’re on the hunt for the perfect outfit or the latest accessory, Poshmark is where it’s at. Meanwhile, Mercari in my eyes, has become another eBay or Facebook Marketplace, so to speak. You’ll find people list just about anything they want to get rid of that’s small enough to ship across state, on the app.
I also personally like Poshmark’s search features much better! In fact, one of my favorite features of there’s is searching for the exact item or similar items of the one you’re interested in by doing a “search by size” at the bottom of a listing. You can do this both in-app and on their website:

Shipping and Returns
Should you ever find yourself with receiving something not as described, completely different, or damaged, Poshmark makes return shipping a no-brainer. They provide a prepaid, pre-addressed label once you open a dispute and Poshmark awards the dispute in your favor – which takes the hassle out of shipping. They have a solid buyer protection policy, so you can shop with confidence.
I’ve had some instances where I received a clothing item ripped or stained, and Poshmark will ask if you would want to keep the item with some sort of discount or cash back, instead of returning the item entirely. This may be a good option for you if you intend to dry clean the item, or know how to sew the ripped section yourself. It’s a win-win for everyone because you till get to keep your item, the seller will still get their earnings, and Poshmark doesn’t lose out on their commission or additional cost of a return shipping label.
Mercari also has a decent return shipping and buyer protection process, but it’s not as seamless as Poshmark’s. They offer more shipping options, which can be good or bad depending on how you look at it. For me, the simplicity of Poshmark’s system is a big plus.
Conclusion: Why Poshmark Wins
In the battle of Poshmark vs Mercari, Poshmark comes out on top for me. The sense of community, user-friendly interface, fashion focus, easy shipping, and great seller experience make it my favorite place to shop online. If you haven’t tried Poshmark yet, I highly recommend giving it a go. You might just find your new favorite app!
