My Perfect Show-Stopper Resort Wedding Guest Dress

My best friend recently got married at a beautiful beach resort in Cancun, Mexico (the Dreams Riviera Cancun Resort). The weather was perfect that weekend with temperatures in the low 80’s and so it was time for me to pick out a resort wedding guest dress that I had been dying to wear for such the occasion!

The wedding itself was beautifully put together. She had a pinks, tans, white and gold theme, with plenty of large, blooming roses. The wedding took place outdoors by the beach and the ceremony itself was under a large palm tree hut. It was such a wonderful vibe, we couldn’t have asked for a better, more perfect day for a wedding!

I went back and forth between a few dresses. I had a few Mac Duggal dresses that I initially wanted to wear, specifically their floral, shoulder ruffle-tiered chiffon dresses. I have it in their yellow and blue and was contemplating wearing one of them on the day of her wedding.

But I ultimately decided to pass on this style and designer. My reason(s) being that I wore that yellow one for my engagement photos and so wearing the blue one too close to my engagement (which was a month prior) was taboo! Also, this dress is very long on me. I’m 5’3″ and this was a good 4-6 inches longer than me at my tallest with 5 inch heels! Wearing this on the beach or pebbled areas would have been a disaster.

Next, I was debating between two pink dresses I had in my closet and ready to wear. Both of these dresses are some of my favorite designers. They’re a little on the pricey side but I managed to snag these dresses on Poshmark for a fraction of the price.

RIGHT: Zhivago The Black Parade Pink Floral Embellished Dress

I decided that the Zhivago dress was a no for me because when I tried it on, the front was a little too low cut for me and exposed my chest! If you’re large chested, you may need to make some alterations on the front of the dress so that it doesn’t split open and show your ta-tas, haha!

And while I did bring the Bronx & Banco Sienna dress with me, I actually didn’t wear it! I ended up making this my “backup” dress in case I got cold feet for my number one pick!

So what did I end up wearing?….

Sau Lee Nova Gown Beach Resort Wedding Guest Dress

After some contemplating and discussions with my girlfriends prior to leaving for Mexico, I chose the Nova pink and green gown by Sau Lee.

At first I was a little hesitant because I thought that the chest area would not fully cover me and my boobs would pop out but I was pleasantly surprised when I tried it on. It did cover well and added a hint of sexiness with a bit of under-boob showing. Also, I did not wear any boob-pasties or a bra with the dress. While I did think about it, I felt there was enough support that I didn’t need them. Plus, I had also forgot to bring them, lol.

The ombre colors are exquisite! I felt like a pretty flower with a stem! What I really love about the dress is that the waist part has a bit of a peplum flare, almost like there is something underneath it that is propping it up. But the fabric is just thick and bunched up, giving it the illusion that it’s got tulle to prop it up. There is also a second peplum area around the knee/calf area.

Although the dress is polyester, it doesn’t feel cheap. It feels well made, with lots of fabric and very good attention to detail. The sewing and bunching of the fabric in certain areas make this dress look very luxurious and expensive. Well – it actually is expensive! This Sau Lee dress retails for $550 on Revolve, however, I got SUPER lucky and scored this for only $165 on Poshmark! I couldn’t believe that the seller was willing to sell it for so low especially since I had bought it new with tags from her.

While the dress is long, I did get so many compliments on this gown! I was really taken aback as to how many people approached me at the wedding saying how beautiful I looked and how gorgeous the dress was! It makes me want to find another occasion to re-wear the dress. But as they say, if you’ve been photographed one too many times in a dress, it’s time to part ways with it. I am re-selling it on my Poshmark store for a decent price (It’s been dry cleaned and ready to wear once again).

I had a blast with my friends that weekend and Mexico is just one of those places to have a good time and wear the cutest outfits! I’m so glad I made the choice to go with the Sau Lee Nova gown because it was a hit and photographed really well in all the photos taken of me!

Hopefully this post has inspired you with some options and ideas if you’re ever on the look out for your own resort wedding guest dress. Brands like Bronx & Banco, Zhivago, and plenty of other well known brands can be found on Revolve or Nordstrom. Happy shopping!
