My 6 favorite must-have items for your craft & hobby room
If you’re anything like me, you know that having a dedicated space for your creative endeavors is an absolute game-changer. It is the items in a craft room that gives you the inspiration you need to get you going!
I have an entire room dedicated to my crafting needs and over time I’ve found ways to organize it to make crafting that much easier. I found myself needing these 6 must-have things in my hobby room that I highly recommend for anyone else wanting a crafting room of their own.
Wall Pegboard
Let’s start with the ultimate organization hack – the wall pegboard. This versatile and space-saving solution is a craft lover’s dream come true. Hang your tools, brushes, scissors, and even those pesky rolls of washi tape on these pegboards. Not only will it keep your essentials within arm’s reach, but it also doubles as a stylish piece of art that showcases your colorful supplies.

You can find pegboards at just about any crafting or online store (Michaels, Amazon and even Home Depot to name a few). But my absolute favorite place to buy quality pegboards is at IKEA! They have a good selection of sizes, and their pegboards are made of plastic and not the poor cardboard quality that you’ll often find on Amazon or Home Depot. These are made to last! IKEA also has a large selection of accessories for your pegboard, such as shelves, hooks, vinyl roll holders, mini-cubies, and so much more. I love their selection and colors!
You’ll want to have a pegboard (or several placed together) to hold essentials that you use on the daily, such as scissors, paint brushes, beads and other such items.
Rolling Storage Cabinet
Say goodbye to clutter and hello to convenience with a rolling storage cabinet. These babies are like your craft room’s personal assistant, holding everything from yarn to fabric to paper. The best part? You can wheel it around the room as you switch between projects, ensuring you’re always in the creative flow without having to go on a scavenger hunt for your materials.

Every crafter needs one of these. I repeat – Every. Crafter. Needs. One! These cabinets are perfect for a hobby room because the drawers are shallow enough to store and display things horizontally and you’re not having to dig to the bottom of the drawers to get at items tucked away. They’re also short enough to be rolled underneath a desk, thereby saving you a ton of space in your craft room. I usually store my stickers, various vinyl rolls, and cardstock neatly in these drawers.
Ribbon Ladders
If ribbons are your weakness (I know they’re mine), a ribbon ladder is a must. Imagine a beautiful display of all your ribbons neatly arranged, making it easy to select the perfect one for your project. No more tangled messes or digging through drawers – just pure ribbon bliss.
There will always be a time where you’re going to need a ribbon for a project of yours. It could be wrapping up a completed crafting project you made as a Christmas gift for your friend, or just ribbons as decorations for a candle project. I have a ton of ribbon spools of various styles colors, and thickness and it’s always a plus to display them out on a ladder. It makes it so much easier choose from the selection you have out on display, roll out a piece and cut it to your size.
A Pair of Really Good Scissors
Let’s cut to the chase (pun intended) – a high-quality pair of scissors is non-negotiable.
Whether you’re trimming fabric, paper, or ribbon, investing in a reliable pair will save you time and frustration. Plus, let’s be honest, there’s something oddly satisfying about using scissors that effortlessly glide through materials.
I’m a huge advocate for a good pair of quality heavy-duty scissors. If you’re looking to make clean cuts and not destroy any fabrics or leathers you’re working with, get yourself a pair of fabric scissors. They’re typically used for heavy-duty fabrics but also work great with making clean cuts to cardstock, cutting off plastic tips, cork and even thin metal wire (which you might typically find in faux flower stems). My favorite pair of scissors to use are the professional, stainless steel heavy duty tailor scissors. You can find these in just about any fabric store. Amazon sells them for under $10!
Drawer Dividers and Organizer Trays
Tame the chaos within your drawers with some strategic organization. Drawer dividers and organizer trays are like the superheroes of the craft room, keeping your buttons separate from your beads and your threads from getting tangled. The result? A harmonious drawer utopia where every item has its place.
Drawer dividers are perfect to pair up with your rolling storage cabinet (see above). They’re just the right height to fit into the drawers and usually, if you Tetris them well, you’ll be able use up most of the drawer space with the dividers. You can find drawer dividers at your local HomeGoods, TJ Maxx or, an At Home store. There’s also Michaels (in-store and online) and Aliexpress and Amazon sell a few dividers in bulk for a great price! And lets not forget IKEA!

Storage Boxes
Last but definitely not least, we have storage boxes – the unsung heroes of any craft or hobby room. From acrylic paints to knitting needles, these boxes are your ticket to a clutter-free workspace. Opt for transparent ones to easily locate what you need without having to open every box in your quest for that elusive glitter glue.
I use storage boxes to store those crafting supplies that are not used as often. They’re great for separating out and organizing my materials, and having labels on them is also helpful. I usually store these in my closet in my hobby room.

They come in all shapes and sizes and in pretty designs too. I find really well made ones (made of thick MDF board) at TJ Maxx or HomeGoods usually. And oftentimes, I like to get them when they come in a set (sort of like Russian Dolls). If you have an At Home near you, sometimes you can find great deals for storage boxes by as much as 75% off!
So there you have it – six absolute essentials to create the craft or hobby room of your dreams and to give your craft room inspiration. Remember, your creative space is a reflection of your passions, so don’t be afraid to infuse it with your personal style. With these must-have items in tow, you’ll be ready to tackle any project that comes your way while enjoying every moment of your crafting journey. Happy crafting! 🎨🧵✂️
