Why the Louis Vuitton Neverfull is the Best Everyday Designer Bag

I’m certain everyone has seen the Louis Vuitton Neverfull bag at some point in their life – you either own one or know someone that does. I have had my Louis Vuitton Neverfull for over 10 years and it is still going strong! It is in my opinion, truly the best everyday designer bag and I’m going to tell you why!

One of the most common characteristics of luxury living is convenience. And because we are such a logo and appearance driven society, we forget about this component.

I have seen and heard all the discourse about the Neverfull and in this post I want to talk about what this bag really means, what it is really used for and why it is still a great bag to buy to this day! If you know luxury then you’ll definitely understand what I’m about to say.

The history behind the very popular Neverfull

To understand why the Neverfull came about and got so popular, let’s dive a bit into it’s history.

Did you know when the Neverfull first launched in 2007, it was intended as a seasonal beach bag and it was created to compete with the Goyard Saint Louis Tote (which in my opinion is SUCH an ugly printed tote, but i digress)?

The LV Neverfull bag was never meant to be a purse but Louis Vuitton kept putting this bag back into its yearly rotation because it became such a popular bag and everyone wanted one. In fact, most people who own one, don’t even utilize it fully (or rather, just not aware of the other types of usages).

For example, were you aware that the bag can be turned inside-out and can be toted around with the cloth part of it exposed? This was the main reason it was initially intended as a beach bag, so that it could be turned inside-out and placed on the sand on the beach.

In addition, this bag normally comes with a pouchette which can be used as a mini clutch for a dinner occasion for example, after a day at the beach! And yet another way to wear the Neverfull is by collapsing it on its sides by pulling those side leather straps, thereby giving it a flatter look.

The Neverfull is essentially a 4-in-1 bag! You’re getting:

• A large version of the bag that you normally see toted
• It’s inside-out version
• A dinner or occasion clutch
• And a pulled-in version

But what’s up with the steep price tag?

I find it rather interesting the the price of the Louis Vuitton Neverfull is talked about as if it is too high for what people claim they are getting. But really, I just think they are unaware of all the different ways to use this bag. It does much more than being an ubiquitous tote that you see everywhere.

There are bags out there that are priced much higher, but give you much less in design and usage. Take for example, the Dior Book Tote (No hate to Dior though – they’re one of my favorite brands!).

Now you’re also probably asking yourself: it’s mostly made out of canvas so why should it be priced so high?

Well did you know that the Louis Vuitton Neverfull takes approximately 45 hours of craftsmanship to make? The leather handles are designed specifically to hold a lot of weight, so much so that you can place an infant (don’t actually do this!) in the bag and carry is that way. You might see a lot of dog mom carrying their little puppies around inside their neverfull – I know I have! Those leather handles from the Neverfull will not break with the weight you can place in that bag.

A great starter everyday bag?

I personally believe that the LV Neverfull makes for a perfect starter bag for anyone looking to start their luxury collection. In fact this was my first luxury purchase and it’s been 10 years and I still carry it around everywhere with me.

This is a great starter bag because of its functionality and honestly it’s rare to find a luxury bag at this price with this level of functionality and durability!

Very Popular means a great investment

The LV Neverfull is a very popular bag which makes it a wonderful investment bag due to its resale value. In fact, the Neverfull is one of the few luxury bags that holds and/or even increases its value.

Since the Neverfull made its debut in 2007, it has retained 90 to 125 percent of it’s value!

But it’s just so…Basic!

This bag has been called basic and boring, I get it. Everyone has one. But that is essentially the whole point of this bag! After all, if you want something that is durable and flexible, chances are it’s going to look pretty basic. And if it’s a bag that offers these conveniences that people look for, then chances are people are going to want it.

You’re getting basic, everyday, functionality within the luxury space at what I believe is an affordable price relative to other luxury goods. And on top of that, it’s resale value will hold for many years assuming you can keep it in good condition.

The Louis Vuitton Neverfull can be many options – it can be a diaper bag, a beach bag, a daytime tote. It can be your casual “t-shirt, jeans and coffee” go-to tote bag and even your midday flight, carry on tote for weekend trip.

Where to buy the Neverfull

There’s a lot of chatter out there about the true price of the Neverfull with some saying it can reach as high as $3000. I’m not sure where people are getting this price tag but as of writing this in 2024, I can assure you that an LV Neverfull is not that much and you can snag one for cheaper.

The Neverfull comes in three different sizes:

• PM, which stands for “Petit Modele” (Small Model in French). Measurements of the PM: 29 x 21 x 12 CM. 
  This size is ideal for everyday use such as a daytime stroll in the city or to tote at a semi-fancy dinner.
• MM, which stands for “Moyen Modele” (Medium model in French). Measurements of the MM: 37 x 29 x 17 CM. 
  Perfect for a work or school bag as it’ll be just big enough to carry a laptop or books.
• GM, which stands for “ Grand Modele” (Large Model in French). Measurements of the GM: 40 x 33 x 20 CM. 
  This bag can be used for anything and fit basically anything. It makes for an ideal travel, carry-on bag.

Buying the Neverfull brand new directly from the Louis Vuitton website will set you back at most $2000 for its largest version.

One thing to note however, Louis Vuitton has recently implemented periodic “wait list” for those that want to get their hands on what I believe is really the best everyday designer bag. They’re going down the Hermes or Chanel route of exclusivity where you’ll be put on a wait list after you purchase and you can only pick it up in store.

If you find that you can’t purchase the bag and have it shipped to you, then Louis Vuitton is likely running one of their “wait list” cycles for exclusivity. I think this is pretty absurd but if you really want to get your hands on one, look to but at other places like The Real Real, Poshmark, or even FashionPhile.

All in all, The LV Neverfull is a great option and a wonderful starter luxury bag because it is affordable (relative) especially if you buy it secondhand. It’s also accessible and functional. In my opinion, this bag makes it the best everyday designer bag that’ll keep you happy for many years to come.
