What is Poshmark?

Poshmark is a leading online marketplace that allows individuals to buy and sell new or pre-loved clothing, accessories, and beauty products. With millions of users, it has become a go-to destination for fashion enthusiasts and sellers alike. What makes Poshmark particularly useful is its seamless user experience, social interaction features, and wide selection of items across various brands and styles. Whether you’re looking to score a designer piece at a fraction of the retail price or monetize your own fashion treasures, Poshmark offers a convenient and engaging platform to explore and connect with fashion enthusiasts from all around the world.

As someone with a rather large closet, I’m constantly recycling and decluttering old outfits to make space for new ones. and while I do donate a substantial amount, some of my clothing I cannot seem to part with by donating them because I feel that they would be better appreciated if I sold them on a second-hand market such as Poshmark.

What is your goal for selling?

Is it worth selling on Poshmark?

It is important to note what your goals are when selling online to determine if selling on Poshmark would be worth the effort.

  • Are you looking to make this a side hustle?
  • Are you willing to hold inventory for long periods of time?
  • Are you trying to maximize your returns?
  • Or are you just trying to get any amount back from your clothing?

The first few years of Poshmark were great in the sense that You could really get your money’s worth by reselling your gently used clothing if it was in pristine or like new condition (or even brand new if you had never worn it). The app, and online reselling as a whole was still a new concept and people were willing to pay a little more for good quality clothing because inventory was low.

However, as the years passed, the app and reselling got very saturated. Now you just have a plethora of options to choose from. And this meant that competition was very fierce with reselling.

Sellers can still make decent money on Poshmark, but they have to have a large inventory and be able to hold on to their inventory in storage for long periods of time. Brands and listing prices also determine how much and how fast you can sell.

The type of brands Matter & Time Listed

If you are looking to sell now on Poshmark, it really depends on the brand of the clothing and how fast you want to resell your items. Very high-end clothing, shoes and accessories still do very well on Poshmark and you can still get a decent return on your money based on the original price of the item that you’re selling. Labels such as Zimmerman, Louis Vuitton, Burberry, Bronx & Banco, and other well-known luxury brands to name a few, still do very well on Poshmark’s second hand reselling marketplace. They also sell relatively quickly.

However, for other (still great) brands such as Club Monaco, Zara, Banana Republic, Kate Spade or ASOS – these brands are so saturated nowadays on the marketplace that you’ll have a tough time selling for the price you want. If you are willing to hold on to your items until they sell, then you may get lucky eventually.

Though most people would want to sell their clothing and accessories rather quickly. If you’re moving, for example, or simply wanting to make more space in your closet, you’ll want your items to sell in a relatively short timeframe. This means for more common brands such as the ones I listed above, you’ll have to list these items for well below the original price tag of the listing itself. And even then there is no guarantee that it will sell quickly. There is just so much inventory on Poshmark, you will need to rely on the community to re-share and like your listings so that they get more views.

Work to build a following to help sell your closet

To do this you will need to build a following. Best way to build a following on Poshmark is to like other listings, to help reshare other seller’s listings, and to list items yourself so that you build a following of buyers interested in your closet.

When you have a decent following on Poshmark, You can leverage your followers by resharing your listings to them. Also, they get notified if and when you edit your listing’s price. If you do, what’s called a price drop on Poshmark (which is essentially altering the listing’s price to lower than what you initially listed it for), your followers will all get notified.

The more items you list in your Poshmark closet, the more likely you will get buyers who will bundle items together to make one larger purchase. Pair that with your low listing prices (especially if you are looking to recycle your clothing quickly), and buyers will be more tempted to bundle items together. It is also cheaper shipping costs for buyers when they purchase.
