How to style Long (tall) over Knee OTK Boots

I love, love, LOVE over-the-knee boots. When autumn’s approaching, I get all giddy because my boots, coats and sweaters come out of the closet! However, some OTK boots are TOO tall, especially if one is petite (like myself). So how do we style and wear taller than usual OTK boots? I’ve got a few style inspo ideas for you in this post.

Find the perfect pair first!

Before we jump into styling tips, you’ll want to choose the right pair of OTK boots. Go for a style that flatters your legs, and pick a color that complements your wardrobe. Personally, I love black (and brown or taupe) suede boots because they’re versatile and always chic. But don’t be afraid to explore other shades and materials that resonate with your style.

Balance with Length

When styling long OTK boots, the length of your outfit matters. You don’t want your boots to compete with your clothing. Mini dresses, skirts, and even shorts are great choices for a bold and balanced look. If you’re opting for pants, make sure they’re slim-fitting or skinny to create a sleek silhouette.

But in general, very long OTK boots tend to look like leggings themselves (depending how loose they fit on your legs). They’re also sometimes referenced as Thigh High Boots as they essentially go up to your mid thighs. This is why opting for mini anything is usually the way to go if you want to expose the entirety of your boots.

Layers for the Win

Fall and winter are prime OTK boot seasons, so layering is your best friend. Consider throwing on a chunky sweater or a cozy cardigan to keep warm while still looking effortlessly stylish. This is also the perfect opportunity to experiment with textures and patterns.

I love pairing very long thigh boots with a long button-up, collared blouse under a chunky, oversized sweater that hits you just above mid-thigh. Then style it with an oversized coat and a large comfy scarf to complete the look! Optionally, you can pair your boots with leggings, skinny jeans or leave them bare. Any of these three looks look great!

In addition, if you want to accentuate your waistline, add a thin belt with your sweater. If your belt is too long, style is such that it looks like a knot (see first photo in this section for reference – it’s very easy to do and looks very chic!).

Play with Proportions

Styling OTK boots can give you a chance to play with proportions. If you’re wearing a baggy sweater, go for a mini skirt or shorts to balance the look. Alternatively, if you’re donning a slim-fitting dress, you can opt for oversized outerwear to create an exciting contrast. The juxtaposition of the chunky top and the shorter bottom creates a harmonious and eye-catching ensemble.

On the flip side, if you’re flaunting a form-fitting dress, embrace the drama by opting for a longline coat or a flowing cardigan. This not only adds an extra layer of sophistication but also ensures your outfit flows seamlessly from head to toe. The key here is to create a visual rhythm that keeps the eyes moving, highlighting the stunning silhouette of those killer thigh high boots.

Monochromatic Magic

Creating a monochromatic look is a great way to keep things chic and sleek. Pair black boots with black leggings or jeans and add a matching top. Monochromatic outfits always look put-together and elongate your silhouette. It’s the epitome of effortlessly cool style.

However, monochromatic doesn’t mean boring. Instead of overthinking the rest of your outfit, keep it simple and stick to varying shades of black; it’s about creating a seamless, elegant vibe. It’s an opportunity to play with different textures and fabrics within the same color palette. Think a cozy black sweater with leather leggings or a suede mini skirt. The key is to add subtle variations that create visual interest without straying too far from the monochromatic theme.

If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, experiment with textures within the same color family. Mix leather with suede or play with different fabric finishes to add depth to your monochromatic masterpiece.

Accessorize Smartly

When it comes to styling long over-the-knee (OTK) boots, the right accessories can take your look from trendy to total showstopper. Personally, I love to play with accessories to add that extra oomph to my outfit. One foolproof way to elevate your OTK boot game is by throwing on a statement belt. Cinch that waist, girl! It not only adds a touch of glamour but also breaks up the long lines of the boots, creating a flattering silhouette.

Oversized sunglasses are another go-to accessory when rocking tall OTK boots. Not only do they scream “chic,” but they also give off an air of mystery. There’s just something about pairing them with these boots that makes you feel like a style icon. And let’s not forget about the power of a chunky scarf. Whether you’re bundling up for the colder months or adding a pop of color to a neutral ensemble, a scarf is the perfect way to tie your entire look together.

Lastly, consider experimenting with different textures and materials in your accessories. A leather jacket, a faux fur stole, or even a fringed bag can add that touch of edge or boho flair that perfectly complements the sleekness of thigh high boots.
